Stages of Samadhi Infographic Poster
''with the help of meditation, the mind leaves the mixture of sattwa, rajas and tamas & rests in its pure state” - Vivek Chudamani verse 363
Yogic meditation is a practice that’s said to bring about a change to the state of one’s mind. This state is known as ‘samādhi’. But what does this state look and feel like?
To speak of ‘samādhi’ is an impossible task. How can one describe a state where the notion of a separation between the meditator and the meditated is suspended? Thankfully, Sage Patañjali devotes a whole pād (or chapter) of the Yoga Sutras to this very topic.
This poster captures the stages of samādhi as described by both Patañjali (within the Yoga Sutras) and the rishis (yoga’s first ‘seers’) in the Upanishads.
How to use: The stages of samādhi are divided into two: meditation by using an anchor for one’s focus; and meditation outside of form or thought. The first stage, samprajñāt (or ‘with form’) is subdivided into four categories, with the first two categories being subdivided even further. Follow the trajectory from the triad (triputi) of meditator (dhyāta) meditating (dhyān) on the meditated (dhyeya) through the stages of samādhi, all the way through to a singular, razor beam of focus (ekagrata).
