YOGA NIDRA FOR KIDS
10 minute practices to help kids settle into sleep
(designed by a parent, inspired by kids)
‘I can go to bed with a clear mind and an open canvas. And then I paint my dreams for the night.’
-Garnet, age 7
WHAT IF WE CULTIVATED A RELATIONSHIP TO STILLNESS IN OUR KIDS THAT WAS POSITIVE?
The stillness a yoga nidra practice inspires is about rest, about daydreaming, about acknowledging that even kids need help with pausing.
On nights when my kid is stirring and struggling to fall asleep, we use my recording. I really don’t want to make grand claims about how yoga nidra can help your kiddo, but I’ll excitedly share that her nidra recording has about a 90% success rate with helping her fall asleep. It felt promising enough, that I went ahead and made recordings for my two nephews.
‘I have listened to it before bed and it makes me feel relaxed.’
-Declan, age 12
about yoga nidra for kids
-
Yoga nidra is a practice we take from lying down with our eyes closed. With the recordings, you’ll hear my voice offering suggestions for what to imagine and how to rest your body.
Each recording is roughly 10 minutes in duration and includes the following reminders:
1) You don’t need to listen to everything I say.
2) There will be times where you don’t hear my voice and it’s quiet. I’m still here, but I’m giving you some space to daydream.
3) This practice can help your body and your mind to settle and relax. You could use this recording to fall asleep, or to take a break when you feel like you need it.
The practices offered are for kids aged six and older.

For kids: Get yourself comfortable. Brush your teeth, put on your favourite pajamas and climb into bed. Dim the lights or turn them off all together.
For parents: I recommend you rest with your kiddo while listening to a recording for the first time. It can be helpful to remind your child that the point of nidra is to relax and fall asleep. This means they don’t need to hear every word I say.
The recordings are best used as a sleep aide, but if your kiddo loves them, they can listen any time of day.

To Fall Asleep and Have Good Dreams
This one is for the troubled sleepers. Try this practice as a support towards falling asleep. To Rest and Release Some Worries
Sometimes our worries show up as thoughts that keep us from relaxing. In this practice, we blow our worries up like balloons and release them to fly high in the sky.To Prepare for a Big Day
This is a great one to use either in the morning or on the eve of a big day. We prepare ourselves by repeating the phrase, ‘I can do it’. -

Our youngest really struggled with sleep. Some nights he would come down to complain about being unable to sleep for up to an hour after bedtime. The first night he listened to his nidra recording, he didn’t come down once. It has become a part of his nighttime routine and usually helps him to get to sleep without incident.
